completing a five year farriering apprenticeship in
Victoria, John Pittard
spent 2 years working in England.
First shoeing both stud and race horses at Newmarket
and then as the sole consulting farrier at the Newmarket
Equine Research Centre where he worked in conjunction with veterinarians
dealing with corrective shoeing techniques and therapeutic shoeing for horses
with leg and hoof problems.
John then spent a
further 8 years overseas developing farriers
for the Jakarta Racing Management and Jockey Club of Pakistan before
returning in 1978 to his own business in Australia. He has worked on
winners of the Caulfield Cup, Golden Slipper and AJC Derby and both the Grand
National and Great Eastern Steeplechase. John's own apprentices have
themselves become some of Austrlia's leading farriers.
Over the last 25 years John Pittard has developed techniques of lateral and medial
extensions and elevation for correcting deviations in the legs of foals. In
1991 he was employed by Arrowfield Stud (Scone, NSW) to oversee the development of foals and he
was able to fully explore his speciality of problem
leg deviations in foals. During this time Arrowfield
produced the top selling yearling at the Sydney Easter Sales (Australia's
premier sale) on four occasions.
John employs a team of farriers and he continues to be hands on with his speciality of correcting problems be it foals, weanlings,
yearlings, race horses, mares or stallions.
